About
Afropunk began as a 2003 documentary by James Spooner profiling Black participants in American hardcore-punk scenes, and grew into the Afropunk Festival, first held in Brooklyn in 2005, now staged internationally. The aesthetic both reclaims Black presence in subcultures historically coded as white (punk, goth, metal, hardcore) and forges new visual languages combining African diasporic styling with alternative codes. Looks lean on natural hair worn proudly (afros, locs, twists, braids dyed in any colour), bold makeup, leather and denim with patches, fishnets, harnesses, distressed band tees, statement jewellery, and African textile prints worn with combat boots and tartan. The festival has become a runway in itself — Solange, Lupita Nyong'o, and Janelle Monae have all aligned with its codes. Afropunk now denotes both a music-festival circuit and a broader visual identity for Black creatives who refuse to choose between heritage and the underground.
Not Punk — Afropunk specifically centres Black participation in alternative subcultures and weaves African diasporic styling through punk codes; it is a movement, not a substyle.
