About

Amekaji (a portmanteau of 'American' and 'casual') is the Japanese fashion lineage built around studying, archiving and reproducing American workwear, military and Ivy garments to a level of fidelity their original makers rarely matched. It crystallised through the 1970s and 80s around magazines like Popeye and Made in U.S.A. Catalog, and through Tokyo and Osaka shops importing vintage Levi's, Champion sweats, MA-1 flight jackets and Red Wing boots. Brands like Kapital, Visvim, The Real McCoy's, Buzz Rickson's and Warehouse turned the look into a globally exported menswear philosophy. Wearers skew older and more deliberate than streetwear — every garment has a known provenance, factory and weave.

Not Americana — Amekaji is the Japanese reproduction-and-archive school of American clothing with deeper menswear nerdery; Americana is the lifestyle-aspirational Western styling of the same garments.
