About

Beatnik is the popular-media-coined caricature of the post-war Beat Generation literary movement (Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Corso) as it filtered into mainstream American consciousness from roughly 1958. While the Beat writers themselves dressed largely like other working New Yorkers and San Franciscans of the era, the Beatnik visual was crystallised by media pastiche: men in black turtlenecks, slim trousers, berets, sandals, and goatees; women in black turtlenecks, capri pants, ballet flats, ironed black hair, smoky black-rimmed eyes, and chain-smoking. The look was a reaction against post-war suburban conformity — an embrace of European existentialist intellectualism, jazz culture, Zen Buddhism, and a deliberately under-styled wardrobe coded for the coffeehouse and the poetry reading. Beatnik visuals were endlessly recycled through 60s film and TV (Audrey Hepburn in 'Funny Face', Maynard G. Krebs on 'Dobie Gillis'), and have continually returned through Dark Academia and the broader 'intellectual girl' aesthetics of the late 2010s and 2020s.

Not the Beat Generation itself — Beatnik is the popular-media caricature of Beat-Generation writers; the actual writers (Kerouac, Ginsberg) generally dressed as ordinary post-war men.
