About

Chav is a British media stereotype that crystallised in the early 2000s, applied (often pejoratively) to working-class youth in tracksuits, Burberry baseball caps, oversized hoop earrings, and visible sovereign rings. The uniform borrowed from football casuals (Burberry check, Stone Island) and US hip-hop (chains, sportswear) and combined them with Avirex, Lonsdale, McKenzie and counterfeit designer labels. The Burberry check became so synonymous with the look that the brand pulled its check products from the UK in 2004 to distance itself. Although the term is class-prejudicial, the visual codes have been steadily reclaimed in recent years — Skepta wore Burberry on the Met Gala, Charli XCX referenced 'chavcore' on the Brat era, and TikTok creators have rebranded it 'chic chav' or 'chavcore'. The look now sits in dialogue with Y2K nostalgia and with adjacent European streetwear like German Talahon and Polish dresiarz.

Not Casuals — Chav came after and absorbed Casuals codes into a more pop-cultural, often-ridiculed mainstream stereotype; Casuals proper is the older football-terrace fashion.
