About

Cholo is a Mexican-American Chicano cultural identity that took its modern visual shape in 1960s and 1970s Los Angeles, descending from Pachuco lineage and inseparable from lowrider, barrio, and pinto (incarcerated) traditions. The uniform is functional and intentional — sharply-pressed Dickies 874s or Ben Davis trousers worn high and creased, a plain white undershirt or oversized Pendleton flannel buttoned only at the top, a Pendleton or Stafford long-sleeve shirt, Locs (Locos) wraparound sunglasses, a hairnet over slicked-back hair or a shaved head, and Nike Cortez or Stacy Adams shoes. Old-English script tattoos, religious iconography (Virgen de Guadalupe), and Aztec imagery carry the deeper meaning. The look is constantly miscoded by outsiders as a costume; for Chicano communities it is a generational identity passed through families and barrios. Mainstream brands — from Givenchy to MAC Cosmetics — have repeatedly profited from Chola/Cholo aesthetic codes without crediting the community.

Not a costume aesthetic — Cholo is a living Mexican-American cultural identity rooted in 60s-70s LA Chicano pride; treat with the respect owed to community heritage.
