About
Dark Cabaret is the Weimar-meets-burlesque corner of the goth wardrobe, fusing Victorian gothic with circus, vaudeville and pre-war Berlin cabaret. The Dresden Dolls and Amanda Palmer were the millennium's most visible promoters, but the visual goes back through Marlene Dietrich, Sally Bowles, Liza Minnelli's Cabaret and Tim Burton-ish theatrical camp. Wardrobe codes: bustier corsets, suspenders, garters and fishnet stockings, ringmaster tailcoats, mini top hats, striped trousers, pinstripe waistcoats, white-painted face with exaggerated black brows and red lips. Jewellery includes pocket watches, monocles and antique-key pendants. The look thrives at venues like New York's Slipper Room and the global Steampunk World's Fair circuit, and overlaps with steampunk, gothabilly and circus aesthetics.
Not Steampunk — Dark Cabaret leans theatrical-burlesque with vaudeville and Weimar references; Steampunk is Victorian-industrial-futurist with brass goggles, cogs and Jules Verne machinery.
