Goth Punk describes the period in the late 1970s and early 1980s when the punk and goth scenes had not yet fully separated and bands like Bauhaus, Killing Joke, the Banshees, Sex Gang Children, Christian Death, the early Cure and the Damned shared bills and audiences. As a contemporary aesthetic it preserves that overlap: black leather biker jackets with hand-painted backs (Bauhaus 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' is a classic), ripped tees pinned with safety pins, ripped fishnet stockings or armwarmers under torn black jeans or skirts, spiked dog collars, crucifix and ankh jewellery, dyed-black backcombed hair with shaved sides, smudged eyeliner and pale base. It feels rougher and louder than Trad Goth — more 1977 bondage trousers than Bauhaus elegance — and rougher and gothier than straight punk.

Not Trad Goth — Goth Punk preserves more of punk's torn, safety-pinned roughness; Trad Goth refined those codes into the polished post-punk gothic of Siouxsie and Bauhaus.
