About

Gothic Lolita ('GothLoli') is a substyle of Japanese Lolita fashion that fuses Lolita's structured silhouette with European gothic darkness. It emerged in the late 1990s as part of the Harajuku fashion scene, with the visual-kei musician Mana (of Malice Mizer) credited as the central popularising figure — Mana founded Moi-même-Moitié in 1999, the first dedicated Gothic Lolita brand. The aesthetic combines the same bell-shaped petticoated skirts of all Lolita styles with abundant black lace, ruffles, straps, crucifix and rosary jewellery, and references to Victorian and Rococo dress.

Not Romantic Goth — Gothic Lolita is a structured Japanese Lolita substyle with strict silhouette rules; Romantic Goth is a Western Victorian-influenced loose aesthetic.
