About
Greaser is the post-war American working-class youth subculture that emerged from the late 1940s and 1950s, named for the pomade slick used to style its signature pompadour or duck-tail haircut. Greaser style was anchored by hot-rod and motorcycle culture, by rockabilly and early rock-and-roll, and by the visual codes of films like 'The Wild One' (Marlon Brando, 1953) and 'Rebel Without a Cause' (James Dean, 1955) — long before 'Grease' (1978) sealed it into nostalgia. The wardrobe is white tees with rolled sleeves and a pack of Lucky Strikes in the cuff, Levi's 501 cuffed turn-ups, black leather perfecto motorcycle jackets, engineer or motorcycle boots, denim jackets, and chain wallets. Female counterparts wore pencil skirts, capri pants, scarves tied at the throat, ponytails, and red lipstick. The Greaser look has been endlessly revived through Rockabilly scenes, through Psychobilly, through Raggare in Sweden, and through every menswear designer (Schott, Saint Laurent, Acne) who has ever rebuilt the perfecto.
Not Rockabilly — Greaser is the broader 1950s American working-class look anchored by hot-rod and motorcycle culture; Rockabilly is specifically the rockabilly-music scene that grew within Greaser visual codes.
