About

Grunge is the early-90s Pacific Northwest aesthetic born from the Seattle music scene — flannels, ripped denim, oversized cardigans, combat boots, slip dresses and graphic band tees. It coalesced as a visual language around bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, was crystallised by Marc Jacobs' 1992 grunge collection for Perry Ellis, and has been periodically revived since. The look prioritises worn-in, washed-out, second-hand garments over anything new or polished — the Doc Martens are scuffed, the flannel is faded, and nothing matches by design.

Not Soft Grunge — Grunge is the Seattle-1992 scruffy original; Soft Grunge is the Tumblr-2014 prettier flannel-and-floral revival.
