Northern Soul

Early 1970s northern English club movement built around obscure American soul 45s, all-nighter dancing, and a wide-leg vest-and-loafer dancefloor uniform.

About

Northern soul began in 1971 when DJ Dave Godin coined the name to distinguish the rare-soul DJs of Wigan, Blackpool, and Manchester from the funkier London scene. Dancers traded the smooth Italian tailoring of the original mods for clothing built to absorb sweat and survive eight-hour spins on Mecca floors: high-waisted Oxford bag trousers, sleeveless knitted vests, white socks, and leather brogues with thin soles for gliding. The Wigan Casino patch and Adidas bowling bag became iconic identifiers. The 'Keep the Faith' clenched-fist logo, lifted from US Black Power imagery and recontextualised by working-class British soul fans, remains the scene's most recognisable graphic. The look has cycled back into Depop demand around the 2014 Elaine Constantine film, with Ben Sherman, Fred Perry, and Gabicci pieces holding strong resale.

Not original mod — northern soul evolved out of mod but traded sharp Italian suits and scooters for wide-leg trousers, vests, and dancefloor practicality.
