Paninari were a Milan-centred youth subculture that gathered around panino bars (sandwich shops) like Al Panino in Piazza Liberty from roughly 1983 to 1989, then radiated across Italy and into European pop culture. Their signature was an exaggerated logo-led brand uniform: Moncler down jackets, Timberland boots, Best Company sweatshirts (the prancing-fox label by Olmes Carretti was the absolute Paninaro shibboleth), Levi's 501s rolled high to show the boots, El Charro belts with brass buckles, Naj-Oleari cotton scarves, and Burlington argyle socks. They were apolitical, hedonistic, brand-obsessed, and considered the first truly post-political Italian youth tribe. The Pet Shop Boys' 1986 single 'Paninaro' canonised them internationally. The look has been continually mined by streetwear revivalists — Supreme has repeatedly referenced Best Company, and Moncler's vintage 1980s pieces are some of the most-grailed puffers in archive resale.

Not Cani — Paninari is the elder, brand-driven 1980s Milan original; Cani is the louder, gelled, late-90s Italian descendant.
