About

Agejo (short for ageha jou, after the magazine Koakuma Ageha) is the host-and-hostess-club-derived Gyaru substyle that codified through the late 2000s. Its centre is Kabukicho, Tokyo's nightlife district, and its silhouette is unapologetically sexy: figure-hugging stretch mini dresses or bandage cuts, deep cleavage, oversized feathered or curled hair extensions, multiple sets of false lashes, dramatic shading and contouring, and 15-centimetre platform pumps or knee-high boots. Brands like MA*RS, Delyle and Tutuanna defined the wardrobe. Agejo was the most explicitly adult Gyaru lane, aimed at women working in or adjacent to Japanese hostess culture, and it remains visible in revival form today.

Not Bodikon — Agejo is the late-2000s nightlife Gyaru with feathered hair, false lashes and rhinestone maximalism; Bodikon is the late-80s bubble-economy original body-conscious style with cleaner disco-era silhouettes.
