Art Hoe began on Tumblr in early 2015 as a creative-expression movement led by young Black artists — particularly the rapper BB (Babeo Baggins) and Mars (the original arthoecollective) — to centre the work and visual identity of artists of colour outside traditionally white art-world spaces. The look quickly developed an iconography: mom jeans rolled at the ankle, Dr. Martens or Birkenstocks, oversized cardigans, beret or bucket hat, Fjällräven Kånken backpack stuffed with sketchbooks, and selfies digitally collaged with sunflowers, classical paintings and pressed flowers. By 2016 the aesthetic had been widely adopted on mainstream Tumblr and Instagram and significantly whitewashed; it remains a touchstone for any conversation about creative-girl style.
