About

Dandy describes a man (the gendered tradition is being usefully complicated today) who treats personal style and elegant dress as a serious vocation, descended from the early-19th-century Regency figure of George 'Beau' Brummell, who established the modern dark single-breasted suit as the gentleman's uniform and made bathing-and-tailoring an art form. The classical dandy wardrobe is rigorously tailored: a perfectly-cut wool single-breasted or morning suit, a starched white shirt with high collar, a silk cravat or knotted bow tie, a brocade or silk waistcoat, a cane, a polished cylinder hat, gloves, and shoes mirror-polished by hand. The intellectual lineage runs Brummell to Baudelaire (whose 1863 essay 'The Painter of Modern Life' canonised dandyism as artistic philosophy) to Oscar Wilde to the Sapeurs of modern Brazzaville. The Dandy revival in the 2010s and 2020s has been led by figures like Andre Leon Talley, Andre 3000, Pharrell Williams, and Janelle Monae, and has explicitly opened the tradition to women, queer practitioners, and the broader Black Dandy lineage being thoroughly documented by scholars like Monica Miller.

Not Old Money — Dandyism is a self-conscious aesthetic vocation focused on personal style as art (Brummell, Baudelaire, Wilde), distinct from inherited-wealth Old Money codes.
