About
Eshay (or eshays, lads, adlays) is an Australian youth subculture that crystallised in Sydney's western and southwestern suburbs in the 2000s and went mainstream-visible through TikTok and Instagram from around 2018. The uniform is hyper-specific: Nautica or Polo Ralph Lauren striped polo, knee-length Adidas or Nike basketball shorts, Nike TN (Tuned 1) sneakers in any colourway, a Polo Ralph Lauren cap (often Patriot 1967), a Lonsdale or sports-team bumbag worn across the chest or high on the waist, and a mullet haircut with a long rat-tail. Tattoos lean Old-English script and Southern Cross. Pig Latin slang ('eetswa' for 'sweet', 'eshay' for 'sesh') is constant. The subculture descends in part from Sydney's housing-commission estates and from older lad cultures (Casuals, Chav lineage), and is closely associated with Nike TNs as a cultural object — ownership of which carries street prestige far beyond their actual price. Eshay culture has been documented by Australian filmmakers, by photographer Sam Wong, and by a generation of TikTok creators who both celebrate and parody it.
Not Bogan — Eshay is the specifically urban Sydney street-tough youth subculture rooted in Nike TN and Polo, while Bogan is broader, older, and more rural-suburban Australian working-class.
