About

Fairy Kei is a Japanese Harajuku fashion style that draws specifically on American children's pop culture from the 1980s — vintage My Little Pony G1, Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, vintage Barbie. It originated with Tavuchi, founder of the Harajuku boutique SPANK! (opened 2004), as her personal style before becoming a recognised substyle. Wardrobe pieces include tulle skirts and petticoats, pastel tights, oversized sweaters and t-shirts (often featuring 80s cartoon graphics), A-line dresses, puffy bloomer shorts and platform pastel sneakers. The look is intentionally loose and cute — form-fitting clothing is generally discouraged.

Not Sweet Lolita — Fairy Kei is loose and 80s-cartoon-themed; Sweet Lolita has a strict bell-shape silhouette.
