Gabber emerged in early 1990s Rotterdam as a working-class response to the perceived snobbery of Amsterdam's house scene. The music — distorted kicks pushed past 180 BPM by producers like Paul Elstak and DJ Rob — found visual form in a strict uniform: bald or buzzed head, Australian L'Alpina or Cavello tracksuit, Nike Air Max Classic BW, and a heavy Figaro silver chain. Women braided their crowns and shaved the sides. The look signified hard graft and hard partying in equal measure, and its association with violence at events like Thunderdome cemented an outsider mystique. The scene's 2010s revival — driven by Dutch labels like Bonne Rotterdam and the Gabber Eleganza Instagram archive — pulled the aesthetic into international fashion attention, with vintage Australian tracksuits now commanding three-digit resale on Vinted and Depop.

Not happy hardcore — gabber is harder, faster, Dutch, and tied to working-class menace, while happy hardcore is bright, melodic, British, and built on cartoon optimism.
