About

Hot Rod is the wardrobe of postwar American car culture — the customised modified cars built and raced by returning GIs from the late 1940s onwards, and the wider scene that grew up around drag-strips, dry-lake racing, and the Bonneville Salt Flats. The look is utility-tinged Americana: cuffed Levi's 501s, white pocket tees, embroidered mechanic and bowling shirts (with flame, dice, eight-ball or skull motifs), Dickies work pants, leather jackets, engineer boots or Converse Chuck Taylors, trucker caps and bandanas. Pomaded hair, pin-up tattoos and a Zippo lighter complete the picture. The aesthetic is sustained today through the Kustom Kulture scene (Mooneyes, Von Dutch heritage, Ed Roth's Rat Fink), the rockabilly community, and Japanese Americana labels (Toys McCoy, Buzz Rickson) that obsess over period accuracy. Adjacent to but distinct from Rockabilly proper.

Not Rockabilly — Hot Rod is the car-and-pit-lane wing of the same Kustom Kulture umbrella; Rockabilly is the music-and-pinup wing built around 1950s rock'n'roll bands and dancehalls.
