Mushroomcore emerged on Tumblr around 2018 and became a distinct TikTok presence in 2020-2022 alongside the wider goblincore and frogcore wave, building on the cottagecore appetite for foraging, fairy-circle photography and natural materials. The visual centrepiece is the fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria) with its red cap and white spots, repeated across prints, hair clips, jewellery, lampshades and tattoos. The wardrobe leans on toadstool-print pieces, brown corduroy and earth-tone layers, knitted mushroom caps, woven baskets, smock dresses, wellies, embroidered cardigans. The mood is woodland-foraging-witch rather than fashion-forward. Wearers tend to skew young Gen-Z queer and femme, and the aesthetic has a sustained presence in craft and cottagecore TikTok. It sits inside a tight cluster with goblincore, frogcore and fairycore.
