Goblincore emerged in late 2019 across Tumblr, TikTok, Pinterest and Reddit as a deliberate counterweight to Cottagecore's sunlit-meadow tidiness. Its premise is the celebration of nature deemed conventionally ugly: moss, mud, snails, frogs, fungi, decomposing logs, animal bones, pebbles, the contents of a forager's pocket. The wardrobe is earth-toned and lived-in: pilled and patched chunky knits in bracken brown and rotten green, corduroy dungarees, flannel shirts, oversized cardigans, fingerless gloves, scuffed Converse and Doc Martens, mismatched socks. Crucially, second-hand sourcing is part of the ethic — fast fashion violates the spirit. Adherents often collect curiosities (rocks, bones, vintage cutlery, pressed leaves) following the goblin folkloric urge to hoard shiny or strange objects.

Not Cottagecore — Goblincore embraces the gnarly, muddy and unkempt (mushrooms, bones, second-hand pilled knits); Cottagecore is the curated sunlit-meadow version (prairie dresses, bread baking, neat aprons).
