About

Neofolk emerged in the late 1980s when post-industrial musicians (Death in June, Current 93, Sol Invictus, Fire + Ice, later Of the Wand and the Moon and Sieben) traded synthesisers for acoustic guitars, hurdy-gurdies and rural folk traditions. The wardrobe followed: long wool overcoats and capes, vintage waistcoats and frock coats, plain linen shirts, military surplus shirts (often German or British army), brown leather boots, brimmed felt hats, runic and Norse-symbol jewellery, hand-knitted wool jumpers, walking sticks, hand-bound notebooks. The palette is earthen — rust, ochre, moss, charcoal, oxblood — and the styling reads as a Romantic-era field naturalist crossed with a 1930s European folk archivist. The scene sits parallel to Dungeon Synth and dark folk and stays small but fiercely committed.

Not Dark Academia — Neofolk leans rural-folk and earthen with military-surplus and runic jewellery; Dark Academia leans collegiate-tweed and Oxford-quad with cable knits and pleated trousers.
