About
Stilyagi (Russian for 'style hunters' or 'stylish ones') were the Soviet youth counterculture, mostly in Moscow and Leningrad, who from the late 1940s through the 1960s adopted American and Western fashion in defiance of Stalinist dress conformity. With Western clothes unavailable behind the Iron Curtain, they hand-tailored their own zoot-suit-inspired wardrobes from whatever fabric they could source: long high-shouldered jackets in vivid colours, narrow drainpipe trousers (uzkie bryuki), thick crepe-soled shoes nicknamed 'manka', loud floral or palm-print ties, pomaded high quiffs called 'kok' or 'cock combs'. Girls wore tight pencil skirts, brightly patterned blouses, bouffant hair, heavy makeup. They listened to bootlegged jazz pressed onto X-ray film ('roentgenizdat'). The 2008 Russian musical Stilyagi (released as Hipsters in English) revived broad cultural interest, and Russian vintage scenes continue to celebrate the look.
Not Halbstarke — Stilyagi were the Soviet jazz-loving counterpart, oriented toward American zoot styling; Halbstarke were the West German rock'n'roll-leaning rebels of roughly the same period.
