About

The Zazous were a Parisian swing-jazz youth subculture (~1940–1945) who responded to Nazi Occupation and the collaborationist Vichy regime by dressing in deliberate excess of every fabric-rationing rule. Boys wore oversized chequered or pinstripe jackets with wide lapels and padded shoulders that fell to mid-thigh, narrow drainpipe trousers ending well above the ankle, thick-soled crepe shoes, pencil-thin moustaches, longer-than-permitted greased hair and ever-present umbrellas. Girls wore short pleated skirts, striped or chequered jackets, very long hair curling onto the shoulders, dark sunglasses, bright red lipstick and wooden-soled shoes. They gathered in the Latin Quarter and Champs-Élysées cafés, danced to forbidden American swing records and were periodically attacked and head-shaved by collaborationist youth groups. Today the look is referenced by Parisian vintage menswear scenes, French swing-dance revivalists and a small TikTok history-fashion contingent.

Not Swingjugend — Zazou was the specifically French Occupation-era swing-youth subculture with its own chequered-jacket and umbrella iconography; Swingjugend was its German counterpart.
