Synthwave emerged in the mid-2000s within the French house scene as artists like Kavinsky, College, and Lifelike began producing music that emulated 1980s film soundtracks and early arcade game scores. The aesthetic crystallised after Kavinsky's 'Nightcall' featured in the 2011 film Drive, then pulled into wider culture through Hotline Miami, Stranger Things, and the Far Cry: Blood Dragon expansion. The fashion translation favours a cleaner, drier 1980s reference set than vaporwave's ironic mall imagery: Members Only-style jackets, white blazers with rolled sleeves, mesh tank tops, sun-bleached pastel polos, and high-waisted acid-wash denim. Aviator sunglasses and Lacoste polo collars over thin gold chains complete the Miami Vice quote. Resale activity is strongest on Etsy and Redbubble for graphics, with vintage 1980s windbreakers and Reebok Classic Workout trainers benefiting on Depop.
