About

New Romantic is the early-1980s London club scene that crystallised around the Blitz nightclub in Covent Garden (run by Steve Strange and Rusty Egan), and which built a deliberately theatrical, gender-fluid, historically-referenced visual language as a reaction against the late-70s punk uniform. The look raided every period costume vault: pirate shirts with cascading lace cuffs, military jackets with frogging, sashes, knee breeches, ruff collars, kohl eyeliner, asymmetric backcombed haircuts, lipstick on men, fingerless lace gloves, and clothes constructed by club-going art-school students like John Galliano (then a Saint Martins student) and Stephen Jones. Musically: Visage, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants, Culture Club. The scene exploded out of Blitz into MTV-era global pop styling and effectively defined the early-80s glam visual that ran through the rest of the decade. New Romantic codes have continually returned — through Galliano's later Dior collections, through Vivienne Westwood's pirate references, through Harry Styles's stage wardrobe, and through every TikTok 'historical fashion' creator working in 18th-century revivalism.

Not Punk — New Romantic was a deliberate reaction against punk, replacing the safety-pin uniform with theatrical historical-drag glamour.
