About

The Teddy Boys (or Teds) were Britain's first proper post-war youth subculture, named in a 1953 Daily Express headline that shortened 'Edwardian' to 'Teddy.' Working-class lads in London's Elephant and Castle and parts of north London adopted long single-breasted Edwardian drape jackets with velvet collars and cuffs, often paired with high-waisted drainpipe trousers, brocade or moleskin waistcoats, slim Slim-Jim ties, brothel creepers (the Robert Reid 1949 invention) and elaborate quiffs held with Brylcreem. Bill Haley's 1956 UK tour for Rock Around the Clock made them tabloid villains. The subculture was revived in the 1970s on King's Road with Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren's 'Let It Rock' shop, and continues quietly today through dedicated rockabilly and vintage clubs.

Not Greaser — Teddy Boys are specifically British post-war Edwardian-revival with drape jackets and drainpipes; Greaser is American 1950s working-class with Levi's, white tees and hot-rod culture.
