About

Ulzzang (literally 'best face' in Korean) is an aesthetic that originated in early-2000s South Korea via the social network Cyworld, where 'ulzzang contests' had users submit their best photos to be voted on. Winners became South Korea's first generation of internet celebrities and many transitioned into modelling, acting and K-pop. The makeup language is distinct: dewy clear plump skin, 'puppy dog' downward eyeliner, emphasis on aegyo-sal (the under-eye fatty deposits to make eyes appear larger), straight low-arch eyebrows, and the signature 'gradient lip'. Circle lenses are often used to enlarge the iris. Fashion is casual, simple and approachable — far less curated than K-pop stage looks.

Not Gyaru — Ulzzang is Korean polished pale-skin minimalism; Gyaru is rebellious Japanese tanning-and-bleaching maximalism.
