About

Witch house was named in 2009 by Travis Egedy of Salem to describe the slowed, chopped-and-screwed occult electronica he and friends were producing on cracked software in Denver and Berlin. Acts like oOoOO, Mater Suspiria Vision, and others deliberately stylised their names in triangle, cross, and Unicode glyph form to gatekeep search. Visually the scene fused chopped-and-screwed Houston rap textures with darkwave and shoegaze atmospherics, generating an instantly recognisable dark blog aesthetic of grainy black-and-white VHS imagery, occult symbols, and stark Helvetica overlays. Fashion ran through Nu Goth and Health Goth: all black, draped athletic-luxe layers, oversized hoodies, mesh, and minimal jewellery. The scene had largely dissolved by 2015, but its visual vocabulary survives in TikTok 'witchcore' edits and Depop tags for monochrome occult layering.

Not goth — witch house carries occult goth iconography but wears it through streetwear and athletic silhouettes rather than Victorian or industrial nightclub uniform.
