Phonk grew out of mid-2010s SoundCloud experiments by SpaceGhostPurrp, Lil Ugly Mane, and DJ Smokey, who chopped DJ Screw and Three 6 Mafia samples into a denser, distorted form. A second wave around 2018 — drift phonk, originated by Russian producers like Kordhell and DVRST — pushed the tempo up and added cowbell loops over distorted basslines. The Need for Speed and Tokyo Drift YouTube edit subculture catapulted drift phonk into TikTok virality from 2021, peaking with DVRST's 'Close Eyes' becoming the platform's most-used drift soundtrack. Visually the aesthetic centres on purple-and-black VHS imagery, sports-car silhouettes, and skull motifs. Fashion translates the digital palette into physical: oversized black hoodies, cargo trousers, balaclavas, and gothic streetwear with corrupted typography. Resale on Depop and Vinted runs hottest on phonk-branded merchandise from drops like Mishka, Phonky Tonk, and SHOEI helmet flips.

Not Memphis horrorcore — phonk samples and references Three 6 Mafia and Tommy Wright III but reformats them through 2010s electronic production and TikTok drift culture.
