Y2K Futurism (also called Cyber Y2K and originally just 'the Y2K aesthetic') is the retrofuturist art and fashion movement that dominated technology, music and design from roughly 1997 to 2004. The visual identity is characterised by bold colours, metallic and chrome surfaces, glossy finishes, blobjects, reflective and PVC clothing, futuristic sunglasses and a 'techno-utopian' philosophy of streamlined aerodynamic silhouettes that echoed contemporary hardware design. It flourished most vividly in Hype Williams-directed music videos from the era — TLC's 'No Scrubs,' Michael and Janet Jackson's 'Scream' — where artists wore custom silver, PVC and leather costumes in spaceship-like sets. The contemporary revival has accelerated through Vetements, Coperni, Mugler and the broader 'cyber' fashion cluster, and is the broader movement of which our existing Y2K Cyber entry is a subset.
