About

Black Metal codified its visual language in the early-1990s second-wave Norwegian scene (Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, Immortal). The wardrobe and stage presence is theatrical and severe: corpse paint (white face base with hard black eye and mouth markings), spiked leather gauntlets and shin guards, bullet belts wrapped multiple times around the waist, leather wristbands with inverted crosses, illegible band logos on long-sleeve tees, all-black layered clothing, leather trench coats, combat boots, long jet-black hair. Promotional photography is shot in misty Scandinavian forests in winter. The aesthetic stayed underground for decades and is now widely visible through fashion borrowing (Vetements, Raf Simons, A$AP Rocky have all referenced it). The scene has its own ethics and history; not all corners share politics — newer bands like Liturgy and Deafheaven have explicitly broadened the audience.
