Thrash Metal codified in the early-to-mid 1980s out of the San Francisco Bay Area (Metallica, Exodus, Testament), Los Angeles (Slayer, Megadeth), New York (Anthrax) and Germany (Kreator, Sodom, Destruction) — the Big Four anchored the genre and the wardrobe. Sleeveless or short-sleeved denim battle vests (the 'kutte') covered in band patches over a long-sleeve band tee, ripped or stonewashed jeans, Reebok Classics or white high-top sneakers, baseball caps, denim jackets, long centre-parted hair, leather wristbands and bullet belts. The look is more skater-adjacent than the leather-and-spikes early-80s NWOBHM (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest) — Thrash kept the patches and tees but swapped the leather for denim and trainers. It runs through every metal-festival photo since 1986 and gets fresh airtime through TikTok metal-revival accounts.
