About

Bosozoku (literally 'violent running tribe') is the Japanese biker subculture that peaked through the 1970s and 1980s and remains a touchstone for menswear designers worldwide. Its dress code reads almost like a uniform: a long, square-shouldered tokko-fuku coat embroidered down the back with the gang name, slogans and imperial-era motifs in metallic thread; loose hachimaki headbands; jika-tabi or tall lace-up boots; and either a high pompadour or a wave-set perm. Members customised their bikes with extended fairings and shrieking exhausts to match. Membership numbers have collapsed since the 2000s as Japanese police tightened laws, but the silhouette continues to feed Visvim, Kapital, Junya Watanabe and countless streetwear collections.

Not Yanki — Bosozoku is specifically the motorcycle and modified-scooter gang subculture with embroidered tokko-fuku; Yanki is the broader school-age delinquent culture without bikes.
