About

Sukeban (literally 'boss girl') was the female counterpart to Yanki and Bosozoku, taking shape in the late 1960s and dominating the 1970s. Its uniform-as-rebellion is now iconic: the standard school sailor seifuku modified by lengthening the pleated skirt to mid-calf (the opposite of the kogal mini), shortening the top to expose the midriff, and embroidering the jacket with gang names and imperial slogans. Surgical masks, dyed perms, hand-bound chains and concealed weapons defined the silhouette. Sukeban had its own media canon — Sukeban Deka, Stray Cat Rock — and continues to inspire designers from Junya Watanabe to international labels. The actual gangs faded by the late 80s but the visual register has had perpetual revivals.

Not Kogal — Sukeban lengthens the school skirt as a refusal of sexualised girlhood; Kogal radically shortens the same skirt to perform schoolgirl glamour. Opposite hems, opposite politics.
