About
Funk fashion crystallised between 1970 and 1979 as the dance-floor wardrobe of Black America's funk and disco-soul golden era, beamed weekly into living rooms through Don Cornelius's Soul Train. The look rejected the matching three-piece suits of the 1960s soul groups in favour of flamboyant individual expression: flared bell-bottoms in satin, velvet, and polyester; platform shoes elevating both height and bravado; halter jumpsuits, fringed leather, oversized hats, and the Afro as a statement of cultural pride. George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic pushed the style into intergalactic territory with Mothership-era robes and capes, while Bootsy Collins's star-shaped sunglasses became permanent shorthand. The aesthetic has cycled steadily back through Bruno Mars's Uptown Funk era, the Beyoncé Renaissance tour, and a 2024 Pharrell Louis Vuitton collection that pulled platforms and wide collars onto the runway. Vintage 1970s flares, satin shirts, and platform shoes resell strongly across Depop and Etsy.
Not disco — funk fashion is the broader 1970s Black American style, where disco specifically codifies the Studio 54 wardrobe of slinky halter dresses, gold lame, and white suits.
