Psychedelic fashion bloomed between roughly 1965 and 1971, articulated through London boutiques like Granny Takes a Trip, Mr Fish, and Biba alongside San Francisco collectives like the Grateful Dead's Family Dog scene. The look set out to render LSD's heightened colour and pattern perception in textile form: paisley, kaleidoscopic florals, op-art swirls, tie-dye and batik fabrics, and bell-bottom trousers paired with kaftans, fringe vests, and embroidered Indian cottons. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the post-Sgt. Pepper Beatles canonised the silhouette. The aesthetic faded by 1972 under glam rock's tighter Lurex tailoring, but cyclical revivals — Anna Sui's 1990s Studio 54 collection, the 2010s Coachella era, and 2024 Gucci pre-fall — keep it in rotation.
