Gibson Girl was the visual archetype of the modern American woman drawn by illustrator Charles Dana Gibson for Life magazine from the 1890s into the early 1910s — taller, more athletic and more independent than her Victorian mother. The look is built around the shirtwaist (a tailored high-collared blouse with leg-of-mutton sleeves), tucked into a long A-line skirt, with the bust pushed forward and hips back by an S-bend corset to create the era's distinctive curve. Hair piled high in a soft pompadour with a low bun finishes the silhouette. Today the aesthetic survives mainly through historical-costuming and reenactor communities, vintage-loving brides, period-drama costume departments (Anne with an E, A Little Princess) and a small wave of TikTok creators reviving the shirtwaist-and-skirt combo as 'old-world feminine' workwear.
