About
Victorian Period covers the historically-accurate wardrobe of the long reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), which itself moves through several distinct silhouettes: the Romantic-era gigot sleeves of the early years, the cage-crinoline bell skirts of the 1850s–60s, the bustled drape of the 1870s and 1880s, and the leg-of-mutton sleeves and S-bend corsetry of the 1890s. Throughout, women wore boned corsets, layered petticoats, high collars, kid gloves, parasols and bonnets. Men wore frock coats, morning coats, waistcoats with watch chains, top hats, cravats, walking sticks. Mourning was a culture all its own — full crape blacks for years after a death. Today the aesthetic is sustained by Victorian reenactor and steampunk-adjacent communities, historical costumers, period-drama costuming, and a smaller but visible TikTok history-fashion contingent who wear genuine antique pieces. Distinct from Victorian Goth, which transposes Victorian visual language into modern alternative subculture.
Not Victorian Goth — Victorian Period is the historically-accurate dress of the era; Victorian Goth transposes its visual codes into modern alternative subculture with darker styling and goth music-scene context.
