Guido is a New York and New Jersey Italian-American youth identity that crystallised in the late 1970s disco era, evolved through 80s and 90s club nights, and reached global recognition through Jersey Shore in 2009. The visual is heavy on grooming — spiked gelled hair (or the 'blowout'), maintained tan, sculpted physique on display, and a cologne that arrives before you do. The wardrobe leans on tight Ed Hardy or Affliction graphic tees, Armani Exchange jeans, designer belts, gold chains and crucifix necklaces, and box-fresh Italian leather shoes. Female counterparts (sometimes called Guidettes) layer pouffed hair, bedazzled tops, leopard print, hoop earrings, and platform heels. The term itself originates as an Italian-American slur and is contested within the community; Jersey Shore both popularised and complicated its meaning. The codes survive today inside the Mob Wife revival and inside any nightclub-coded reality-TV pastiche.
