Kawaii is the foundational Japanese cultural phenomenon and aesthetic centred on cuteness, childlike innocence, charm and simplicity. The visual language is soft and pastel (often pink, blue, white), built from rounded shapes and features that evoke tenderness — big eyes, small mouths, plush textures, ruffled details. Kawaii flourished in Japan from the 1970s with the rise of cute manga and anime characters, anchored by Sanrio's 1974 creation of Hello Kitty, then expanded globally through Pokémon and Sailor Moon in the 1990s and 2000s. As fashion it underpins virtually every cute Japanese subculture (Lolita, Decora, Fairy Kei, Sanriocore, Yume Kawaii, Yami Kawaii) and exports broadly into pastel-and-cute Western style. The Japanese term itself implies not just cute but delicate, vulnerable and worthy of care.
