About
Kogal (kogyaru) is the schoolgirl-derived branch of the Gyaru subculture that dominated late-90s Tokyo street photography and later became a global shorthand for Japanese schoolgirl fashion. The look begins with the standard sailor seifuku — but radically shortened above the knee, paired with white loose socks (slouchy knee-highs sometimes glued in place), brown loafers, a bleached or honey-blonde dye job, full bronzer tan, and a Burberry-check or Louis Vuitton-monogrammed accessory pile-on. The style codified through the magazine Egg and was tightly bound up with the rise of mobile-phone culture, kogal slang and Shibuya 109 retail. It has had repeated revival waves and remains the foundational reference for any 'Japanese schoolgirl' fashion read.
Not Sukeban — Kogal radically shortens the school skirt and pairs with bleached hair to perform schoolgirl glamour; Sukeban lengthens the same skirt to mid-calf as a refusal of sexualised girlhood.
