About

Ganguro (literally 'black face' in the sense of deeply tanned skin) emerged in the late 1990s as the most provocative offshoot of the Gyaru subculture, peaking around 1999–2000. Its wearers used heavy bronzer and tanning beds to achieve extreme dark complexions, then layered white concealer or eyeshadow around the eyes and lips for deliberate visual contrast — a direct rejection of the Japanese mainstream beauty ideal of pale flawless skin. Outfits came from Shibuya 109 boutiques and ran to neon mini dresses, tie-dye, Hawaiian-floral prints, towering platform boots, and stacks of hair extensions bleached to silver-blonde or orange. The aesthetic was widely demonised by Japanese media at the time and is now experiencing a sympathetic reappraisal.

Not Gyaru — Ganguro is the extreme-tan, white-eye-makeup peak Gyaru substyle; mainline Gyaru is broader and includes paler, more elegant variants like Onee Gyaru.
