About
Marshmallow Girl is the Japan-originated body-positive aesthetic that emerged in 2013 with the launch of plus-size fashion magazine La Farfa, which coined the term to positively describe women who don't conform to Japan's prevailing thin beauty ideal. The fashion is yurufuwa — Japanese for loose and fluffy — emphasising soft textures, rounded silhouettes and comfortable loose-fitting clothing in light pastel colours (especially pink) to create a gentle, airy, cosy impression. The label was inspired by the tactile 'heavenly marshmallow feel' of soft stomachs, repositioning a body shape often subject to negative labels as cute and desirable. The aesthetic emphasises body positivity, self-acceptance and kawaii-for-all-sizes, and has spread internationally as a counterpoint to thin-coded beauty standards.
Not Soft Girl — Marshmallow Girl is the specifically Japanese body-positive plus-size yurufuwa aesthetic; Soft Girl is the broader pastel-and-cute Western internet aesthetic.
