About

Mori Kei (literally 'forest style') is a Japanese fashion aesthetic that imagines what a contemporary young woman living alone in a forest cottage might wear. Not a peasant, not a fairytale character, not a costume — a real modern person who has chosen rural simplicity. The aesthetic emerged in Japan in the late 2000s and gained an international following through 2010s blogging communities. The visual register is layered, soft, natural and quiet. Wardrobe pieces include layered tunic dresses, long flowing skirts, soft cotton or linen blouses, hand-knit cardigans, lace-up leather boots, tights, woven baskets, simple jewellery in wood or stone.

Not Cottagecore — Mori Kei is a structured Japanese aesthetic with quieter layering and earth-tone restraint; Cottagecore is brighter, more floral and Anglo-rural.
