Nautical (or Maritime) style derives from the traditional naval uniforms of Britain and France — adopted into civilian leisurewear in the late 19th century, codified by Coco Chanel in the 1910s when she lifted the breton-striped sailor's mariniere into womenswear, and a permanent reference in fashion since. The colour scheme runs navy blue, white and red with touches of gold and tan.
