About

Pop Punk fashion describes the late-1990s and early-2000s aesthetic that grew out of skate-park and pop-punk-band culture — blink-182, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, Yellowcard. Where Emo is melancholic and slim, Pop Punk is upbeat and looser. The wardrobe runs to checkerboard Vans slip-ons, baggy denim shorts at knee length, graphic band tees, oversized hoodies, studded belts, baseball caps, plaid skirts with combat boots, neckties worn loose with tank tops (the Avril uniform). Hair is choppy with chunky highlights or punk-streaked. The colour palette is brighter than Emo. The genre's revival has been sustained by When We Were Young festival, Olivia Rodrigo's pop-punk pivot (Sour, 2021) and Machine Gun Kelly's Tickets to My Downfall.

Not Emo — Pop Punk is skate-park playful (checkerboard Vans, baggy shorts, neon); Emo is post-hardcore melancholic (skinny jeans, side bangs, all black).
