About

Emo as a fashion subculture peaked between 2003 and 2009, taking its visual cues from the mainstream wave of post-hardcore and emo-pop bands — My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Panic! at the Disco, AFI, The Used. The signature wardrobe is body-conscious black: skinny jeans, fitted band tees, studded belts, Converse Chucks, Vans, hooded zip-ups, plaid wristbands. Hair is the most identifiable signal — dyed jet black with razored layers and a long side-swept fringe covering one eye, often with chunky highlights. Beauty is heavy black eyeliner (men and women), painted black nails, lip rings. The aesthetic resurfaced in 2022 with the My Chemical Romance reunion and the When We Were Young festival.

Not Mall Goth — Emo is post-hardcore (MCR, side bangs, skinny jeans); Mall Goth is nu metal and industrial (Slipknot, Tripp pants, fishnet).
