Mall Goth describes the 1995-2008 suburban shopping-mall variant of goth and alternative culture, defined by the chain retailer Hot Topic and the soundtrack of nu metal, industrial and emo music. The wardrobe centres on Tripp NYC pants (oversized, chained, often plaid or vinyl), band tees (Slipknot, Korn, Marilyn Manson, My Chemical Romance), studded belts, fishnet tops or gloves, spiked chokers, plaid skirts with fishnets, Converse and combat boots, and arm warmers. Hair is dyed black or with chunky highlights; eyeliner is heavy and smeared. The aesthetic was scorned by traditional goths as commercialised but reclaimed in the 2020s with a wave of late-millennial nostalgia. Distinguished from Goth proper by mall-bought sourcing and from Emo by the broader nu metal/Manson lineage rather than the post-hardcore one.
