About

Tudor names the historically-accurate wardrobe of the English Tudor dynasty (1485–1603), spanning Henry VII through Elizabeth I — the dress of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, Showtime's The Tudors, and any portrait by Hans Holbein. For women: rigid bodices stiffened with bents or buckram, square or sweetheart necklines edged with partlets, conical farthingale skirts (early period) or drum-shaped Spanish farthingales (later), gable or French hoods covering the hair, and elaborate sleeves slashed and pinked to show contrasting linings. For men: padded doublets with peascod bellies, slashed sleeves, hose and codpieces (early), then trunk hose and canions (later), flat caps or plumed bonnets, ruffs that grew increasingly enormous through Elizabeth's reign. The aesthetic is sustained today by Tudor reenactor groups, Renaissance fair circuits, historical costumers and the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), plus a steady stream of period-drama costuming inspiration.

Not Medieval Fashion — Tudor is the specifically late-15th to early-17th century English court style with its own farthingale and ruff vocabulary; Medieval covers earlier centuries with different silhouettes.
